Though modern translation equate restu more commonly with ‘blessing’, restu originally meant something along the lines of ‘bequeathal’, or something that is given to you. You could bequeath blessings and curses to others, but spoken usage eventually favoured bequeathing blessings above bequeathing curses, hence the majorly positive connotation.

You can’t use restu today to mean curses, of course, but it’s still something interesting to think about. (I’ll edit the entry with an archaic tag).
